The Course

Ullapool Golf Club’s nine-hole course is as challenging as it is beautiful, with each hole presenting unique obstacles and breathtaking sea and mountain views. From the opening hole, The Oaks, to the closing Rowan Over, golfers are treated to a variety of landscapes, including lateral water hazards, gorse-covered mounds, and even the chance for a beach bounce-back onto the fairway. Signature holes like An Teallach and Summer Isles will leave players in awe, while the strategic placement of bunkers and natural hazards adds to the challenge.

Ullapool Golf Course: A Hole-by-Hole Guide

Hole 1 & 10 – The Oaks/Vyner (Par 4): A challenging start (or midpoint) awaits at The Oaks, offering an undulating fairway bordered by lateral water hazards. The second round’s approach from the yellow tee presents a slightly easier task with fewer obstructions to the green.

Hole 2 & 11 – An Teallach/Buoy (Par 3): Known as the signature hole, it frames the stunning An Teallach mountain across Loch Broom. Varied tee positions demand precision to avoid the gorse and land on a sloping green, making wind direction a critical consideration.

Hole 3 & 12 – Loch Broom/Waterside (Par 4): Challenging golfers with a narrow fairway that veers left and gorse on the right. The loch borders the left side, threatening overly ambitious shots. The 12th iteration increases the challenge with an angle that brings the right-side rough into play more prominently.

Hole 4 & 13 – Summer Isles/Rhue Aird (Par 3): Another Par 3, this hole requires a well-judged shot to clear the initial gorse and land on a green guarded by bunkers. Changing tee heights between rounds alters the challenge, emphasizing the need for strategy over strength.

Hole 5 & 14 – Gully/The Burn (Par 4): This hole presents a visual treat with a sweeping view to the South. The eponymous gully must be cleared to reach an uphill fairway, leading to a two-tiered green surrounded by hazards. The 14th adds a twist with positioning that makes the gully even more daunting.

Hole 6 & 15 – Terrace/Castle (Par 4): A dogleg left that tests the golfer’s ability to navigate a sloping fairway. The ideal shot is a soft draw around the bend to set up for an uphill approach to the green, nestled among protective mounds.

Hole 7 & 16 – Crofts/The Mounds (Par 4/5): The most versatile hole, it stretches to nearly 400 yards from the yellow tee, presenting a straightforward yet lengthy challenge. The terrain and strategic hazards like “Alan’s Garden” add complexity, especially on the second playthrough.

Hole 8 & 17 – Long/Ben Dearg (Par 5): As the longest hole, it demands strategic thinking to navigate doglegs and avoid the “Alan’s Garden” hazard. The landscape’s natural undulations play a significant role in how the ball will lie, making each shot a thoughtful decision.

Hole 9 & 18 – Rowan Over/Rhidorroch (Par 4): The concluding hole leads players back to the clubhouse, with a fairway that tests one’s ability to stay focused till the end. Strategic hazards and the multi-levelled green make for a fitting end to the round.
